Proceeds from our Chicken Pot Pies and Very Berry Pies directly support the women of Lydia’s House. Support groups are a safe space for victims of domestic violence to discuss their emotions and personal experiences. Some of the topics addressed are “red flags,” safety plans, women’s health issues and parenting techniques. Support groups are held once a week and childcare is provided for residents. Supportive housing is offered to men, women, and families who may benefit from living in a stable environment for an extended period of time. Residents can live in a supportive housing environment while working or attending school part-time or full-time.

It’s a little-known fact that between 40-45% of homeless people in our community are women and children, and that number is growing. This is precisely why Lydia House is such an important part of Long Beach Rescue Mission. Every $2.15 provides a meal and a seat at the table for families and individuals who have nowhere else to turn.
A Hand Up for Her Family
This is a safe, affordable, supportive, sober living environment with two- and three-bedroom apartments available. For more than 69 years, Open Door Mission has welcomed the hungry and homeless when all other doors were closed. Nationally, about half of all homeless women and children are fleeing domestic abuse and violence. Garland Thompson Men’s Center provides emergency services for men in need of immediate assistance. Each man is offered an opportunity for life change through resource case management, which provides the first steps toward preventing future homelessness.

Permanent Supportive Apartments
Spiritual support may or may not align with a specific faith tradition, depending on the views of each woman and child. Open Door Mission offers over 40 life-changing programs, including the New Life Recovery Program and Journey to Work. Open Door Mission is committed to empowering men, women, and families with the tools they need to become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community. The Veterans Housing First Program focuses on supportive services, crisis intervention, educational screening, and assessment in areas of mental health, chemical dependency, job skills, and life skills. The top floor is the Permanent Supportive Housing for those who may benefit from living in a stable environment while working or attending school full-time. Lydia’s House provides a place of healing and a voice of hope for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Our transitional housing program is offered for up to two years, and serves as a critical link between emergency shelters and safe, independent living. During this period of healing, residents at Lydia’s House are provided advocacy and resources they need to build a life of hope and self-independence.
Open Door Mission devoted 89.4 percent of all fiscal 2022 expenses to food, shelter, and life-changing programs for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Heartland. In 2017 Lydia’s House expanded our mission to include permanent housing. We opened our first building of affordable housing in March of 2019 and our second building in May 2022. In 2023 we broke ground on a shelter expansion, in preparation for our 10 year anniversary in 2024.
